City of North Bend release - North Bend (Oregon) — While many local residents were still recovering from Thanksgiving dinner, one four-legged member of law enforcement was already back on duty.  According to North Bend Police Chief Cal Mitts, K9 Athena played a key role in assisting the Coos County Sheriff’s Office during a holiday weekend investigation.  “K9 Athena didn’t let that turkey slow her down today,” Chief Mitts said. “While many were still recovering from Thanksgiving dinner, K9 Athena was hard at work.”  Mitts explained that Athena was called in to help deputies during a search, and her nose quickly picked up on something significant.  “Thanks to her sharp nose, two ounces of meth are off the streets,” he said. “That find helped open the door to a much bigger case.”  The discovery is expected to support ongoing investigative efforts by partnering agencies.  Chief Mitts praised Athena’s continued contributions to public safety.  “Great work, Athena. Keeping our community safe one find at a time,” he said.  The North Bend Police Department reports that K9 Athena will continue her regular patrol and detection duties as investigations proceed.
