A FLUSH OF EXCITEMENT AT MINGUS PARK One of Coos Bay’s most beloved parks has received a meaningful upgrade that will benefit families, caregivers, and visitors for years to come. After years of relying on portable facilities, new permanent restrooms have been completed at Mingus Park. Thoughtfully located near the playground for convenient access, the restrooms will officially open to the public this Friday. While restrooms may not be the most glamorous park feature, they are essential. This long-awaited addition is family-friendly, fully ADA accessible, and designed to better serve the many people who spend time enjoying the park’s playgrounds, walking paths, and open spaces. The project represents a significant collaborative effort, with City staff playing a central role in bringing it to life. Public Works crews completed all design and construction site grading for the new facility and installed the electrical conduits, sewer lines, and sewer lift station. Their expertise and hands-on work were instrumental in making this improvement possible. In addition to the new restrooms, several related upgrades have enhanced the surrounding area. Drainage improvements have been installed to reduce ponding in the playground area—making soggy patches after rainy Oregon days a thing of the past. Fresh mulching material has also been placed throughout the playground to create a cleaner, safer, and more welcoming play space for children of all ages. These improvements reflect an ongoing commitment to maintaining parks that are safe, functional, and enjoyable for everyone. Parks are where birthday parties are celebrated, friendships are formed, imaginations run wild, and neighbors connect. Investing in foundational amenities like restrooms, drainage, and playground surfacing helps ensure that the community can continue making memories for years to come. The project was made possible through the generous support of grant partners, including Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Judith Ann Mogan Foundation, The Reser Family Foundation, Pacific Power Foundation, First Interstate Bank, and the Bay Area Sportsman Association. Community patience during construction and continued support of public spaces have also played an important role in bringing the project to completion. 2/27/26 - LCSO Case 26-1010 Lane County Sheriff’s K9 Ripp apprehends hit and run suspect On February 27th at 4:40 p.m., Lane County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a head-on crash on Eagles Rest Road near milepost 2. Fire personnel also responded and arrived on scene first. When they arrived, one of the drivers, James Lawrence Gehrman, 55, of Dexter, sped away in his damaged vehicle. A BLM Ranger located the vehicle several miles from the crash. A deputy responded with K9 Ripp and got to work. Gehrman was soon found hiding in the forest nearby. He was initially uncooperative, but soon decided to not give K9 Ripp any more work. He was arrested without further incident and lodged at the Lane County Jail for the following charges: - Fail to Perform Duties of a Driver - Property Damage - Disorderly Conduct in the 2nd Degree - Felon in Possession of a Restricted Weapon - Probation Violation on a conviction for Unlawful Use of a Weapon Thanks to the Bureau of Land Management for their assistance on this call.Photos from Lane County Sheriff's Office's post Featured News by Lane County Sheriff
