MAYOR'S MESSAGE North Coos 911 Dispatchers Earn Commitment to Excellence Award It is my great honor to announce that North Coos 911 Dispatch has been awarded the prestigious Commitment to Excellence Award from the Oregon Chapter of APCO/NENA—one of only four presented statewide each year. This recognition was earned under extraordinary circumstances. In August 2024, the Coos County Sheriff’s Dispatch Center faced a staffing collapse that threatened emergency coverage. North Coos 911, though already stretched thin themselves, stepped up immediately—first covering shifts, and then, with less than 24 hours’ notice, assuming all 911 calls and dispatching responsibilities for 27 agencies across the county. This occurred over Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest times of the year. The challenges were immense: dispatchers suddenly had to operate two separate CAD systems, monitor nine radio frequencies, and manage double the call load, all while learning new jurisdictions and procedures on the fly. Through teamwork, determination, and long hours, they not only kept operations running—they delivered seamless, unbiased service when it mattered most. The success of this effort was guided by the strong leadership of Tessa Cupp, 911 Communications Administrator. With nearly 20 years of experience and steady, thoughtful direction, she helped unify the staff of two centers into one effective, resilient team. With deep pride, we recognize the dispatchers who earned this award: Jennifer Pickett, Holly Booras, Ronald Cottor, Andrew Otton, Tammy Allender, Kristen McGarity, Rhonda Wilson-Larsen, Tracye Pollin, Samantha Fleming, Haley Saccente, Brittany Miranda, Kelsey Reid, Amanda Ott, Casie Stone, Stacy Aranda, Erika Powell Littrell, Annalisa Church, Janel Dunning, and Cathy Larson. On behalf of the City of Coos Bay, I thank each of you for your extraordinary service. Your dedication, teamwork, and professionalism define the very best of public service, and this award is richly deserved. -Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos BayPhotos from Coos Bay - City Government's post

CATCH BASIN CLEANING AT PLANTS 1 & 2 Wastewater treatment in Coos Bay uses a series of large concrete basins in which different stages of treatment is performed. Some basins allow for heavier solid waste to settle to the bottom with gravity, and some have air pumped to the bottom and dispersed through the liquid to oxygenate the hard-working beneficial bacteria (bugs). Each basin requires its own routine maintenance and the water quality team is responsible for entering the basin and cleaning the City’s asset. At Plant 1 on Ivy Street the aeration basin uses hundreds of cylindrical membranes to diffuse the air at the bottom of the basin. These membranes are also called socks. These socks have hundreds of slits in them to allow pressurized air to escape and infuse the water with oxygen that the bugs use as they eat the solids (aka poop) prior to the water being disinfected before exiting the plant. At Plant 2, on Fulton street, the membranes are disc shaped and the material has more smaller perforations that create finer bubbles in the water. Plant 2 has a large hatch in the side of the basin through which the water quality team can enter the basin once it is drained, to clean and perform maintenance on all equipment that is normally under water. Whether the aeration system is shaped like socks or like discs they all need scrubbed and inspected regularly because if even one fails it creates the path of least resistance for the air to rise to the surface instead of getting well dispersed air for the bugs. This process can take several days for each basin cleaning and the crews have worked hard this summer performing these maintenance activities.Photos from Coos Bay - City Government's post

ONE CARD, ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES AT YOUR LIBRARY September is library card sign up month and this year’s theme is “One Card, Endless Possibilities.” No truer words have ever been spoken, and Coos Bay Public Library (CBPL) wants you to know about all the possibilities that are open to our patrons free with a Coastline library card. When most people think about the public library, they think about books. While CBPL does have books, we also have so much more. DVDs, CDs, audio books, e-books, magazines, and of course our wonderful Library of Things are all available to Coos Bay library card holders. Library card holders also have access to our book of the month club and to online resources such as Mango, Consumer Reports, databases, and newspapers like The World. The Library also provides community computers, Wi-Fi, one-on-one tech help and programs for all ages. Do you have kids? Bring them to storytimes, art groups, crafting clubs, maker labs, game times and lots of other family friendly programs. If you are looking for adult programming, we have you covered with a men’s group, art classes, writers’ groups, game nights, Zumba, yoga, community cooking, and so much more. Go online and take a look at our event calendar or stop by the library for a printed copy and you are sure to find something that piques your interest! If you moved recently and haven’t updated your driver’s license or other ID, no problem. You can use a piece of mail that you have received at your new address or a lease or utility bill along with your picture ID to provide the necessary proof. So, if you haven’t taken advantage of the many resources available through your Coastline Library Card, come to the Library or log into our website, coosbaylibrary.org, and sign up for your card to open up those possibilities!

MAYOR'S MESSAGE Closing Out Summer at the Bay Area Fun Festival The Bay Area Fun Festival is here at last, taking place this Saturday and Sunday, September 20 and 21, in downtown Coos Bay. Each year this tradition brings us together to celebrate our community, our history, and the joy of closing out summer with friends, family, and visitors from near and far. Here’s just a taste of what’s in store this weekend: •Vendor market with local artisans, food, crafts, and more filling Central Avenue •Prefontaine Memorial Run with 10K, 5K, and fun runs Saturday morning •Bay Area Fun Festival parade on Saturday afternoon, this year’s theme is “Sunsets and Sandy Shores” •Cruz the Coos on Saturday evening with hundreds of classic cars cruising downtown •RockFest with live music at 3rd and Central all weekend long •Family activities on Sunday, including kids’ pre-runs and events at Marshfield High School The Bay Area Fun Festival has grown into one of the highlights of the year for our community. It’s more than just a schedule of events—it’s a chance to honor local traditions like the Prefontaine Memorial Run, support our small businesses and artisans, and enjoy the energy that fills our downtown when neighbors and visitors come together. I also want to share an important note about travel. Highway 101 will be closed for construction south of Bandon starting Friday night through Sunday evening, with traffic detoured onto longer routes. To make things easier, many of our local hotels are offering discounts for Sunday night stays. If you can, I encourage you to take advantage of these offers. Staying the extra night means avoiding the detour, getting a good rest, and enjoying just a little more of what Coos Bay has to offer. Finally, I want to thank the Coos Bay Downtown Association for their hard work in putting this event together, and also our dedicated city staff who commit their time and energy each year to making sure the Bay Area Fun Festival is safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. I hope you’ll join in the festivities, whether you’re running, cruising, shopping, listening to music, or simply cheering from the sidelines. Together, we’ll make this weekend another memorable celebration of life on Oregon’s Adventure Coast. -Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
