Description

This undated photo taken through a microscope provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Cyclospora cayetanensis oocysts found in a fresh stool sample which had been prepared with a formalin solution and stained with safranin. The cyclospora parasite can survive on surfaces and resist removal through washing, making contaminated produce risky even when safety precautions are followed.

Two deaths have been linked to a cyclospora outbreak that has infected thousands of Americans in 45 states.
