Description
Two students at Mark Morris High School in Longview were arrested on Thursday morning by the Longview Police Department in connection with a criminal misconduct investigation.
The juveniles were taken into custody on four charges: rape in the second degree, unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation, indecent liberties with forcible compulsion, and indecent exposure.
Neither the district nor the city of Longview provided additional information about the people involved because they are minors.
News emerged in early February about an alleged assault involving members of the school basketball team. On Feb. 9 and Feb. 10, Mark Morris High School students walked out of class, holding signs outside the school to call attention to the alleged incidents.
“The allegations are deeply troubling and inconsistent with what our school district stands for,” Longview Public Schools Superintendent Karen L. Cloninger said in a statement after the arrests on Thursday.
The district said it will work with an independent third-party investigator to “review district practices related to our athletics program, including student supervision and staff training.” In the meantime, it has provided additional counselors and adults for support on campus.
The investigation into the allegations is ongoing. The city of Longview and the Longview Police Department said they would not be providing additional information, but they are seeking information about any potential criminal conduct.
