Description

In 1912, Portland’s first parks superintendent, Emanuel Mische, sketched out plans for formal gardens and playfields on Ross Island -- based on earlier designs by the Olmsted Brothers, influential landscape architects. But the city ended up not buy the island.

Before European settlement: The island cluster in the middle of what is now the Willamette River was part of a major Indigenous trade and travel corridor where people moved, fished and gathered. More than 30 Native villages thrived in the Portland Basin, most along riverbanks and wetlands. As white settlers arrived, waves of smallpox, measles and malaria killed the majority of the Indigenous communities – which is likely why no Indigenous name for Ross Island has survived.
