Federal climate scientists say a rapidly strengthening El Niño is increasingly likely to rank among the most powerful events observed in modern records, raising concerns about global weather disruptions, rising temperatures and significant economic impacts in the months ahead. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, the climate pattern now has a greater than 90% chance of reaching “very strong” status during the fall and winter of 2026-27, Reuters said,
