Maverick Lyon, 21, had dropped a knife he held in self-defense as he ran out of his home to escape from his brother, who was holding him hostage at knifepoint, his lawyers said. The image shows Lyon two steps past the point where he dropped the knife, seen on the brick patio to the right of his right knee, when an Albany police officer fired his first shot at Lyon, according to his lawyers.

A college student who was shot and seriously wounded by Albany police after he fled from his family’s home, where his drug-impaired brother had held him at knifepoint, has filed a lawsuit against the police department, alleging negligence and excessive force.
