Coos Bay, OR – October 15, 2025 — Bay Area Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Gretchen Nichols, RN, BSN, MBA, as its new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Nichols, who previously served as Chief Operating Officer, brings more than two decades of executive leadership experience and over thirty-five years in the industry. She brings a deep commitment to advancing patient care and organizational excellence.  Nichols has been a driving force behind several strategic initiatives at Bay Area Hospital, including operational improvements, service line expansions, and workforce development. Her leadership during the hospital’s recent transformation efforts has earned her the respect and trust of staff, physicians, and community partners alike.  “Gretchen brings exceptional leadership, deep healthcare expertise, and a clear vision for the future of Bay Area Hospital,” said Simon Alonzo, Board Chair. “Her experience, integrity, and commitment to our mission make her the right person to lead our organization forward. The Board looks forward to working with her as we continue to strengthen our services and deliver the highest quality care to our community.”  Nichols was selected following an interview and validation process involving hospital executives, board members, and physician leaders. Her appointment reflects a shared commitment to continuity, innovation, and community-centered care.. Kelly Morgan, who has served as the interim CEO, will stay on in an advisory role, as needed, during this transitional period and liaise with State legislators on initiatives already in motion to financially support the hospital.  Nichols stated,  “The team at Bay Area Hospital is dedicated to delivering exceptional care and fostering a culture of compassion, resilience, and excellence. Prior to joining Bay Area Hospital, Gretchen served as a Hospital President for a health System serving the Portland, Oregon market.  She has experience in all areas of health systems, including hospital operations and provider groups. She is known for her strategic insight, people-first leadership style, and deep commitment to delivering the highest quality service.
