Recognizing Coos Co. Officers & Deputies

CCSO release - September 19th 2026 several Sheriff’s Office Members were recognized at the Coquille Valley Elks law-enforcement appreciation day. Outstanding service - Capt Sean Sanborn, credited with his efforts to bring transparency between the Sheriff’s Office and the community. Sean was recognized for his continuing efforts to keep the public, knowledgeable while also sharing behind the scenes information previously not available to members of our community. Sean has also been beneficial in the monthly newsletter, which he has spearheaded, and is forwarded monthly via the Sheriff’s Office social media accounts. Lifesaving Award - Deputies Hansen & Churchill & Shelley Reese. On Friday, June 27th 2025, at the “UTV” takeover event, a patron, Steve Hershberger, collapsed in vendor row while experiencing a medical emergency. Hauser Citizens Patrol Member Shelly D. Reese, who was volunteering at the event, witnessed Mr. Hershberger collapse and immediately checked his condition and began lifesaving efforts. Moments later, Deputy Allen Churchill and Chief Civil Deputy Tyrone Hansen observed the situation and assisted Shelly with lifesaving efforts by performing CPR for several minutes until medical personnel arrived. Mr. Hershberger was treated by medical personnel on scene, including the use of an AED, and was ultimately transported to the hospital by ambulance. Mr. Hershberger has since made a full recovery. Due to the fast, selfless, and decisive actions of Shelly D. Reese, Chief Deputy Tyrone Hansen, and Deputy Allen Churchill, Mr. Hershberger’s life was saved. These actions are in keeping with the highest standards of the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, and for that reason, Hauser Citizens Patrol Member Shelly D. Reese is being awarded this Life Saving Plaque. Chief Deputy Tyrone Hansen and Deputy Allen Churchill are being recognized with the Coos County Sheriff’s Office Life Saving Award.

Aggravated Theft

CCSO release - Date/Time: December 2023 – August 2026, Case #: S2026-01350, Classification: Aggravated Theft I x16, Location: 57000 Block Fairview Road, Coquille, OR 97423. Suspect(s): Maria R. Padgett (48). Summary: On August 25th 2026, a deputy responded to a business located in the 57000 Block of Fairview Road near Coquille to take a report of embezzlement. As a result of the investigation, it was learned that the company's ex-bookkeeper, Maria R. Padgett (48), had stolen over $300,000 from the company from December 2023 to August 2026. Maria R. Padgett (48) was arrested on (16) counts of Aggravated Theft I. Maria was transported to the Coos County Jail, where she was booked and is being held.

Domestic Harassment

CCSO release - Date/Time: September 19th, 2026 / 10:37 a.m., Case #: S2026-01488, Classification: Harassment Domestic / Felon in Possession of a Firearm x8, Location: 90000 Block Caraway Lane, Coos Bay, OR 97420, Suspect(s): Ethan M. Mason (26), Summary: On September 19th 2026, a Coos County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a disturbance in progress in the 90000 Block of Caraway Lane, just south of Coos Bay. During an investigation, the deputy contacted both parties involved. As a result of the investigation, Ethan M. Mason (26) was arrested on the charges of Harassment, Domestic, and 8 counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm. Ethan M. Mason was transported to the Coos County Jail, where he was booked and lodged.

Arrested for Arson, Lakeside

CCSO release - Date/Time: September 17th 2026 /6:00 p.m., Case #: S2026-01476, Classification: Arson I, Location: Airport Way, Lakeside, Oregon, Suspect(s): Thomas Chapple (43), Summary: On September 17th 2026, at 6:00 p.m., a Coos County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a report of a brush fire on Airport Way near U.S. Hwy 101. During the investigation, deputies identified a suspect as Thomas Chapple (43). Mr. Chapple was arrested on the charge of Arson I. Lakeside Fire extinguished the blaze without further property damage. Thomas Chapple (43) was transported to the Coos County Jail on the charge of Arson I. Mr. Chapple was booked and remains in custody.
