Description

Juneteenth celebrations across Oregon will feature parades, rodeos, performances and community conversations that center Black history, culture and voices.

June 19, 1865, brought long-overdue news to Galveston, Texas: Slavery had ended. Though President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863, it took two more years and the arrival of Union troops for freedom to reach the last enslaved Black Americans.
