Description
June 19, 1865, brought long-overdue news to Galveston, Texas: Slavery had ended. Though President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863, it took two more years and the arrival of Union troops for freedom to reach the last enslaved Black Americans.
