School board members Michelle DePass, (L), Stephanie Engelsman, Virginia La Forte and Rashelle Chase-Miller at a recent forum on school consolidations and closures at Benson High School. Board members heard input about the 2026-2027 budget this week.

Portland Public Schools’ annual budget is convoluted, opaque and difficult for the layperson to understand, according to the 17 community members charged with providing a broader perspective on it to school board members.
