CBPD release - On August 12, 2026, the Coos Bay Police Department investigated an incident that occurred at the downtown farmers market involving two dogs and a family with a newborn child. According to the investigation, a couple attending the farmers market with their 9-day-old infant and their leashed dog encountered an unattended dog on a nearby sidewalk. The unattended dog was wearing a leash; however, the leash had either broken or was not properly secured, allowing the dog to roam freely. The dog's owner was not present at the time. As the couple passed by, the unattended dog became aggressive toward their dog. The father, who was holding the newborn infant, attempted to separate the animals. During the encounter, the unattended dog turned its aggression toward the father and infant, prompting the father to use his knife and stab the aggressive dog.  Following the incident, several bystanders reportedly confronted and harassed the couple. The couple returned to their vehicle and attempted to leave the area while calling 911. During this time, some bystanders attempted to block the vehicle's path, and one individual struck the vehicle. The couple slowly drove away from the area without injuring anyone. Investigators reviewed video footage of the vehicle incident, which corroborated the couple's account, as did the 911 call records.  After leaving the area, the couple drove around the block and then responded directly to the Coos Bay Police Department, where they fully cooperated with the investigation.  The injured dog was transported to a local veterinary clinic for treatment. Investigators later learned that the unattended dog's owner had left the dog while he went to use the restroom. The owner stated that he believed he had properly secured the dog before leaving it unattended.  No people were injured during the incident, and the couple's dog was not injured.  Following the investigation, no arrests were made.  The Coos Bay Police Department would like to remind the public that dogs must be kept on a leash and under their owner's control while in public areas. Responsible pet ownership helps prevent incidents that can place people, animals, and the community at risk.
