UO release - EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon head baseball coach Mark Wasikowski announced Monday the addition of Matt Florer as Oregon's new pitching coach. Florer comes to Oregon after spending the last seven seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at San Diego, including the last two as the program's associate head coach. He started his collegiate career as a pitching coach at Loyola Marymount, his alma mater, during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. "Matt Florer is a proven winner and developer of pitchers," Wasikowski said. "He has a track record of turning good talent into high-end Major League Baseball prospects. He has done this through a combination of valuing player relations, solid knowledge of body movements and pitching mechanics, as well as the much-needed analytic component necessary for connecting with the modern-day pitcher. "Matt has earned the reputation of an outstanding recruiter who has great relationships with high school and travel ball coaches, agents and Major League Baseball scouts," Wasikowski continued. "We are excited to add the Florer family to the nation's No. 1 brand in college athletics – the University of Oregon." Throughout his coaching career, Florer has been instrumental in recruiting and developing top-tier talent, including 10 All-Americans, nine conference player of the year recipients and 43 all-conference players. His impact extends beyond the collegiate level with 26 of his players going on to professional careers through the MLB Draft and free-agent signings. During his eight seasons serving as a pitching coach in the West Coast Conference at San Diego and Loyola Marymount, Florer's pitching staffs led their teams to either regular season or conference tournament championships in 2017, 2022, 2024 and 2025, while leading the league in earned run average three times and boasting the conference pitcher of the year twice. Eight of Florer's pitchers earned first-team All-WCC honors during his time coaching in the league. In 2025, San Diego captured its second consecutive WCC regular season championship, marking the program's first back-to-back titles since 2007–08. Florer's pitching staff once again led the conference in ERA and dominated across nearly every major pitching category. That success was headlined by standout performances from Cal Scolari, who was named the WCC Pitcher of the Year, and first-team All-WCC selections Logan Reddemann and Austin Smith. The 2024 season was historic for San Diego, as the Toreros won both the WCC regular season and tournament championships for the first time in program history, becoming just the second team ever to sweep both titles in a single season. Powered by one of the nation's top pitching staffs, USD ranked in the top 25 nationally across all major categories, including ERA, WHIP, hits allowed per nine innings, strikeouts per nine, walks per nine, strikeout-to-walk ratio, and shutouts. The Toreros finished with a 41–15 record (20–4 WCC), posting the 15th-best winning percentage in the country. Three of Florer's pitchers earned All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association: Conner Thurman (First Team), Austin Smith (Third Team), and freshman Logan Reddemann (Second Team Freshman). Thurman was also a finalist for the 2024 NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, Smith was a finalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award, and Reddemann earned WCC Freshman of the Year honors. Florer's impact was once again evident in the 2024 MLB Draft. Josh Randall became the highest-drafted collegiate pitcher in California after being selected in the third round (85th overall) by the Detroit Tigers, marking the second time in the last three drafts (2022–2024) that a pitcher developed under Florer earned that distinction. Drake Frize was selected in the 17th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks but opted to return to campus, while Ivran Romero (Minnesota Twins) and Calvin Schapira (Seattle Mariners) signed professional contracts as free agents. In 2022, Florer helped guide the Toreros to a 37–20 record and their second-ever WCC Tournament championship. San Diego advanced to the NCAA Corvallis Regional, earning a signature win over Vanderbilt in the opening game. The pitching staff led the WCC in strikeouts (553) and ranked second in K/9 (9.69) and innings pitched (513.2). Left-hander Brycen Mautz led the league in strikeouts (129) and posted a 10–2 record, earning first-team All-WCC accolades and Perfect Game All-American honors before being selected 59th overall by the St. Louis Cardinals in the MLB Draft. Ian Churchill (10th round, Toronto Blue Jays), Ryan Robinson (All-WCC Honorable Mention), and Ryan Kysar (All-Freshman Team) also stood out under Florer's mentorship. The 2021 season saw the Toreros post a 33–12 record, the highest winning percentage on the West Coast while finishing with the WCC's second-lowest team ERA. First-team All-WCC pitcher Jake Miller led the way and was later drafted by the Cleveland Guardians. Newcomers Ryan Robinson and Kieran Shaw were named honorable mention All-WCC, while freshman Ivran Romero opened his career with 20 consecutive scoreless innings. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, San Diego posted a top-25 RPI ranking. Pitchers Carter Rustad and Conner Thurman were both named Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-Americans, making USD one of just five programs nationally—and the only non-SEC school—to have multiple pitchers recognized. Rustad led the NCAA in hits allowed (minimum 20 IP) and ranked second in opponent batting average. That season also featured one of the program's signature moments when sophomore Jake Miller threw San Diego's first no-hitter since 2008. Florer, who also threw a no-hitter during his playing days, became the first person in NCAA history to pitch and coach a no-hitter as well as coach a perfect game. In his first season at San Diego in 2019, Florer helped the Toreros to a 32–21 record—a nine-win improvement from the prior year. Three pitchers from his staff were selected in the MLB Draft, including Chris Murphy (6th round), who significantly improved in nearly every statistical category under Florer's guidance and finished among the nation's leaders in strikeouts per nine innings. Travis Kuhn (19th round) also made major gains, cutting his ERA nearly in half. Before joining San Diego, Florer served as the pitching coach at Loyola Marymount. In 2017, he helped guide the Lions to their first WCC Championship since 2000. That year, LMU's pitching staff ranked first in the WCC in ERA and WHIP and finished in the top 20 nationally in both categories. The staff also set program records for shutouts and walks per nine innings. Cory Abbott led the Lions' staff, earning WCC Pitcher of the Year honors and becoming a finalist for National Pitcher of the Year honors. Abbott posted a WCC-record 0.27 ERA in conference play and was selected in the second round of the MLB Draft before making his Major League debut in 2021. As a former pitcher himself, Florer appeared in more than 70 games during his collegiate career at LMU and threw the second no-hitter in program history in 2013. Florer and his wife, Jordan, have two children, Olivia and Grayson.
