Description

Mourners of all ages leave flowers, stuffed animals and handwritten messages at a growing memorial outside Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Ore., Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. One of several memorials surrounding the school, it is located near the south entrance at Brentwood Avenue and Whitetail Street, where the gunman entered two days earlier.

Nothing will make the shock and sorrow over the Silver Rail Elementary School shootings comprehensible. No matter what investigators learn, there’s no rational answer to the question of why a troubled teen would unleash his rage in this way. As many times as Americans have been through these horrors, there never is.
