EPA administrator Lee Zeldin faced sharp criticism from lawmakers on Wednesday at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing that reviewed the agency's 2026 budget request.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley accused the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency of planning to slash the agency’s budget to the point of evisceration on top of “illegally impounding” billions of dollars in already-approved funding.
