Hurtado's family prays near the Southwest Broadway spot where the 35-year-old was shot and killed by police on Oct. 15, 2026, after witnesses said Hurtado had stabbed two strangers .Eric J. Hurtado's mother and sister. Eric Hurtado’s mother Noemi Aderley said she began her Sunday at church “to heal my broken heart.”

Relatives of Eric J. Hurtado knew he was struggling. The 35-year-old had been exhibiting signs of serious mental illness, and his family in Southern California was hoping to fly him home so they could get him the help they said he desperately needed.
