“In addition to a substantial public interest in ensuring that the government obeys the law, there is a strong public interest in the pursuit and preservation of locally-sourced humanities projects, as emphasized by Congress,” U.S. District Judge Michael H. Simon wrote.

A judge in Oregon on Wednesday ordered the federal government to essentially freeze more than $200 million withheld from state and local humanities councils across the country and to halt any plans to spend the money elsewhere.
