At a Coos Co. Circuit Court hearing in Coquille Wednesday, Johnathan Dowdy plead guilty to two-counts of second-degree Manslaughter, three-counts of third-degree Assault, five-counts of fourth-degree Assault, one-count of Driving Under the Influence and one-count of Driving with a Suspended License. Dowdy was driving his pickup truck on Hwy. 42, south of Myrtle Pt. on April 18th, when he crossed the centerline and ran head-on into a transport van carrying ten-members of the Umpqua Community College softball team. They had just completed a doubleheader at SWOCC in Coos Bay. The driver of the van, and head coach, Jami Strinz and 19-year old Kiley Jones, of Nampa, ID, were both killed in the collision. Other players received moderate to serious injuries. Dowdy was also injured. He will be sentenced on Sept. 11th.
