How Oregon became home to the world’s most studied colony of burrowing owls

Description

Burrowing owls weigh around 5 to 6 ounces with a maximum 1.8-foot wingspan. Found in prairies and grasslands, the long-legged, yellow-eyed raptors nest in holes in the ground.

Seventeen years ago, only four burrowing owl pairs remained at the Umatilla Chemical Depot in eastern Oregon.
