Southbound Interstate 5 traffic follows orange barrels toward the Interstate 405 detour across the Fremont Bridge on Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, looking south from the Overlook-to-Mississippi pedestrian and bicycle bridge in North Portland. One lane remains open to the Broadway/Weidler exit. It was the first weekday of a southbound I-5 closure through the Rose Quarter expected to last up to five weeks for resurfacing and structural repairs.

They warned us. Drivers dreaded it. And now the numbers confirm it: The shutdown of Interstate 5 southbound through Portland’s Rose Quarter is doubling some travel times.
