Teela Banister and her 18-month old daughter Lakelynn outside their rural home in Baker City, Ore. The hospital just 15 minutes away, Saint Alphonsus Medical Center, shuttered its obstetrics department in 2023. When Banister went into labor in April 2024, she and her husband were forced to drive nearly an hour to a hospital in another town. She gave birth to Lakelynn about halfway through the journey.

It was the middle of the night on April 2, 2024, when Teela Banister went into labor. She and her husband raced out the door of their rural home on the outskirts of Baker City in eastern Oregon, hoping to make the hour-long journey to a hospital before she delivered their daughter.
