City of North Bend release - Police say canine’s alert led to seizure of drugs, paraphernalia and additional weapon-related charges - NORTH BEND (Oregon) — A North Bend Police Department traffic stop led to a significant drug seizure this week after K9 Athena was called to assist officers, according to North Bend Police Chief Cal Mitts. During the stop, Athena conducted a deployment and quickly helped officers locate suspected narcotics and related items. Officers recovered approximately 3.2 grams of fentanyl, 4.4 grams of methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia including scales and packaging materials, police said. “K9 Athena stays hard at work keeping our community safe,” Chief Mitts said. “During a traffic stop yesterday, Athena was called in to assist our officers. With calm focus—and a nose that never takes a break—she quickly helped uncover another criminal’s hidden drug stash.” The investigation continued beyond the initial discovery, and the suspect was also arrested on two additional counts of being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon, Chief Mitts said. “This case highlights the importance of teamwork, training, and proactive enforcement,” Chief Mitts added. “Outstanding work by K9 Athena and our North Bend Police Department officers as they continue working every day to keep our community safe.” Police did not release the suspect’s name or further case details in the department’s statement, noting the investigation remains active.
