What started as a dangerous situation in Shute Park ended safely thanks to patience, teamwork—and K9 Mac. On June 23rd, community members called 911 about a man on a rooftop throwing objects at children. When officers arrived, the suspect—32-year-old Oscar Dorantes-Mondragon—refused to come down, openly used methamphetamine in front of police, and repeatedly threatened officers with a knife. Over the course of 4 hours, officers negotiated and worked with Hillsboro Fire & Rescue to provide a ladder. The suspect pulled the ladder onto the roof and continued to throw objects. Due to his impaired state and unstable position, any forced removal would have risked serious injury. Officers cordoned off the area and pulled back. An hour later, the suspect climbed down and fled deeper into the park, which was still active with families. Officers quickly moved in and, with the help of K9 Mac and a Taser deployment, safely took Dorantes-Mondragon into custody. He faces multiple charges: Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Menacing, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Theft. K9 Mac played a key role—but it's important to know that bites are rare. Our K9s are trained to prevent escalation.
