Description

Group portrait of the seven officers of the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs taken during the organization’s 12th annual convention, held in Portland from Nov. 13-15, 1912. Standing in front, with her hands folded, is Sarah Evans, president of the Portland Women’s Club and the state federation. The photo would have been taken just days after the Nov. 5, 1912 election that granted women in Oregon the right to vote. The vote came years before national suffrage for women was passed by Congress.

The Portland Woman’s Club – one of the oldest still-operating clubs in the city – was founded as a place for women to advocate for their community and have a political voice at a time when they did not have the right to vote. During the women’s suffrage era, and with noted activist Sarah A. Evans as president, the club had more than 500 members.
