Oregon’s 2 largest districts face opposition as they attempt to close multiple schools

It’s been about three weeks since Oregon’s two largest school districts announced plans to close up to 20 schools combined.

Portland Public Schools has outlined two scenarios to close up to 14 schools, mostly elementary schools with one middle school. The Salem-Keizer district has proposed closing six elementary schools.

Both districts’ plans would affect more than just the schools up for closure. Between boundary changes and program moves, dozens of campuses and thousands of students would be affected.

We break down the similarities and differences between the two districts’ situations. (Elizabeth Miller)

Oregon looking at new rules for 3-mile-wide ribbon of ocean along the coast

Oregon’s foray into coastal management began in the 1960s with the “Beach Bill,” but it wasn’t until 1994 the state developed what it calls the Territorial Sea Plan.

That plan covers a wide range of issues like undersea cables, fishing and renewable energies.

It’s also getting old.

So the state is asking the Ocean Policy Advisory Council to review the plan to help strengthen protections for Oregon’s marine ecosystem and ensure Oregonians get fair compensation for use of the seafloor. (Kristian Foden-Vencil)
