Good morning, Northwest.

While the weather across Oregon and Southwest Washington is cooling down, a dragon boat team made up of cancer survivors is heading to Taiwan for the International Dragon Boat Federation’s Club Crew World Championships.

Before the team’s trip to Taiwan — where temperatures are still hovering from the high-70s to high-80s — OPB’s Kristian Foden-Vencil spoke with members of the Rose City Rockets.

Here’s your First Look at Saturday’s news.

Portland dragon boat crewed by cancer survivors heads to world championships in Taiwan

It’s 6 o’clock on a sunny Portland evening and 22 people in a dragon boat lift their paddles in anticipation. The Rose City Rockets are about to train for a 500-meter race.

Everyone on this boat is either dealing with cancer or has dealt with it in the past. But as they dig in to practice, you wouldn’t know. There are smiles all around, grunts of effort and sweat.
