LeAnn Locher, statewide Master Gardener outreach coordinator with OSU Extension Service, stands in her backyard next to a giant stand of Matilija poppies, a native to the area of California where she was raised that thrive in Oregon's hotter, drier summers.

Gardening is an act of optimism, a belief in the future based on predicting the seasons, but climate change is making it harder, said LeAnn Locher of Oregon State University Extension’s Master Gardener Program.
