EUGENE—As the women’s 100-meter hurdles started on Saturday at the NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, Oregon’s Aaliyah McCormick found herself with a big opportunity.

🚨 Deputy Z. Smith Apprehends Suspect in Coos Bay 🚓 On June 7, 2025, Deputy Z. Smith learned that 21-year-old Marin Diaz had fled from Coquille Police in a white Ford pickup truck. Records showed Diaz’s license was suspended at a misdemeanor level, and he had an active warrant for a prior DUII charge. On June 11 at approximately 2:42 p.m., while patrolling Old Wagon Road in Coos Bay, Deputy Smith spotted Diaz driving the same white Ford. When Smith activated his patrol lights, Diaz sped down a residential driveway in an attempt to evade him. Diaz abandoned the truck and fled on foot, trying to hide nearby. Deputy Smith called for assistance from Sgt. Slater and K9 Cena, but located Diaz before they arrived. With help from Coquille PD, investigators confirmed Diaz was the driver in the June 7 incident. Diaz was arrested for driving while suspended, his active warrant, and now faces charges related to the Coquille pursuit. 🚨Sheriff’s Office and Bandon PD Swiftly Arrest Suspect in Marple Lane Shots Fired Incident🚨 On June 12, 2025, at about 2:40 PM, Deputy H. Francis, alongside Bandon Police Department and other Sheriff’s Office personnel, swiftly responded to a report of shots fired on Marple Lane in Bandon. A local resident had confronted a man, later identified as 45-year-old Joshua Pittman, on their property. After a brief dispute, Pittman was asked to leave and walked further up the road. The resident later checked their driveway and saw Pittman pull a silver firearm from his waistband and fire a round into the ground. Our dedicated team, including Deputy Francis and Sergeant J. Boswell with K9 Poe, sprang into action. Chief Dhillon of Bandon PD located Pittman emerging from nearby brush, and Deputy Francis secured the firearm as evidence. Pittman was arrested for Menacing and Unlawful Use of a Weapon and taken to Coos County Jail. On June 13, he appeared in court and was released on his own recognizance. We’re grateful for the community’s alertness and our strong partnership with Bandon PD, which helped resolve this incident quickly and safely.
