Description

A hillside on the Grand Ronde reservation about 40 miles northwest of Salem shows the forest regenerating four years after a logging operation. The Tribe, who is seeking a land transfer just north of its reservation, says its logging is much more sustainable than the industrial logging done by private timber outfits.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. Andrea Salinas have introduced legislation that would transfer 18,626 acres of federal forestland to the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, a federally recognized tribe in western Oregon, amid concerns from conservation groups about the extent of logging and potential impacts to wildlife habitat.
