Monarch butterflies with a tracking tag were placed on flowers providing nectar Sept. 17, 2026, at Blue Heron Park in the southern Oregon city of Phoenix.The ultra-lightweight, solar-powered 2.4 GHz radio transmitter weighs 60 milligrams, less than a grain of rice.Washington State University researcher David James, who applies the tags, told the crowd this is the first effort of its kind in Oregon.The free Project Monarch app allows people to follow butterflies in real time.Monarch tag sponsor Suzie Savoie and her mother watched their Simone butterfly fly to a nearby tree.
