Description

Ken Sanchagrin, executive director of the Oregon Public Defense Commission, this week told a legislative committee that the number of unrepresented defendants has declined by 66% in the past 12 months. He said the number of unrepresented defendants in Multnomah County dropped by 57% and Washington County saw a drop of 83%.

Oregon’s longstanding crisis of failing to provide lawyers for criminal defendants has eased in the past year, according to an update from the agency that oversees the public defense system, though more than 1,000 people accused of crimes remain without court-appointed counsel.
