Robert Jacob Hoopes, 24, is accused of throwing a rock inside the front door of the ICE building on South Macadam Avenue and striking an ICE officer in the face on June 14, 2025. The officer suffered a 2-inch gash to his right eyebrow, an affidavit said.FBI investigators used facial recognition software to help identify a man caught on video surveillance and in an OregonLive photo to identify Robert Jacob Hoopes as a suspect accused of throwing rocks that struck an ICE officer in the face in mid-June 2025, according to a federal affidavit.Prosecutor Gary Sussman said Robert Jacob Hoopes, 24, also was helping to ram the metal pole of an upended stop sign into the front door of the ICE building on June 14, 2025.Robert Jacob Hoopes, 24, has pleaded not guilty to allegations of aggravated assault against a federal officer and damaging government property.  The FBI said it used facial recognition software to help identify Hoopes from this photo that ran with an OregonLive story on June 14, 2025. The photo showed his distinctive tattoo on his left forearm and silver bracelet, the FBI noted.Federal officers deployed CS gas, flash grenades and less-lethal rounds outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Portland on June 14, 2025, after protesters formed a shield wall and broke a glass door with a stop sign. The confrontation, declared a riot by police, followed a citywide “No Kings” protest that drew thousands earlier in the day.The facial recognition software turned up this photo from a Reed College Smugmug photo-sharing page called “Canyon Day April ’23,Facial recognition softtware turned up this photo of Robert Jacob Hoopes from Reed College “Canyon Day ‘23,” which helped the FBI identify a suspect in an alleged assault of an ICE officer on June 14, 2025, according to a federal affidavit.
