People enjoy the South Park Blocks in downtown Portland on a sunny summer afternoon. The full canopy of trees offer shade as well as a peaceful feel.

What’s better than a free tree? A carefree one. Portland Parks & Recreation is offering residents 8,500 free trees — and in 17 eligible neighborhoods, city crews will plant them and care for them for the first three years.
