Portland’s outdoor public pools are open for summer, just in time for another warm weekend.
The city will open its seven outdoor swimming pools on Thursday.
It comes days after the state reversed a controversial new order requiring all children under the age of 14 to be accompanied by an adult at public pools.
After receiving public backlash, the Oregon Health Authority now only requires pools to post a sign that recommends this level of supervision.
Portland Parks & Recreation will continue to require adult supervision for any child under the age of 10 at a public pool – and the city urges parents and guardians to keep an eye on children of all ages.
“Parents and caregivers remain responsible for determining whether a child is capable of safely participating in aquatic activities without direct adult supervision,” reads the city’s June 15 press release.
Portland operates 11 swimming pools, with four indoor facilities open year-round. The city’s seven outdoor pools will remain open until Aug. 23 (with Peninsula Park’s outdoor pool closing Sept. 7).
Drop-in swimming costs between $4 and $6, depending on a visitor’s age.
Pools will each offer a free open play swim session every week this summer. Visitors can also apply for discounted entry fees online.
The state will reconsider its adult supervision rules for public pools in the fall.
