Students enter the cafeteria at Harriet Tubman Middle School in North Portland during the first day of school on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

A half hour past noon on Friday, when students all over Portland Public Schools were released from school early due to the heat, it was a balmy 72 degrees, with an ever-so-slight cloud cover.
