Marshfield is No. 1 in the first OSAA/Coaches Preseason Prep 4A Basketball Poll. The Pirates are followed by Marist Catholic, Newport, Philomath and Scappoose. Junction City is No. 9. The 3A boys & girls state tournament will again be held in the Bay Area at the end of the season, March 5-7. Leading the boys’ first poll is Westside Christian, Tigard. Followed by Cascade Christian, Medford, Oregon Episcopal School, Portland, Valley Catholic, Beaverton and Pleasant Hill. In the 2A Poll, Portland Christian is No. 1, Knappa is tied for No. 9. In the 1A Poll, Country Christian is No. 1. Canby tops the 5A and Central Catholic is No. 1 in the 6A.

Opening night for prep girls’ basketball games from around the State, Wednesday: Results from teams from the Coast and in our Region: 4A – Cottage Grove won at Newport, 61-27. 3A – Valley Catholic won at Knappa, 44-31. Myrtle Pt. won at So. Umpqua, 72-27. Warrenton fell at Clatskanie, 38-23. Taft won at Siuslaw, 70-29. Glide won at Reedsport, 69-15. 2A – Nestucca won at Perrydale, 55-24. Vernonia fell at Toledo, 38-26. Waldport won at Triangle Lake, 46-24.
