The OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union State Softball Championships were held Friday & Saturday at Jane Sanders Stadium, on the campus of the University of Oregon, Eugene. In the 2A/1A championship, Grant Union/Prairie City made it three blue trophies in a row, but this one might have been the hardest. The ninth-seeded Prospectors were the visitor in all four playoffs games. But, the last one was the most important as the John Day school (20-8) beat second-seed Weston-McEwen/Griswold (23-6), 10-2 to take first place. Both teams are from Special District 7 and split their regular season games. In the 3A championship game, No. 1 seed Scio downed No. 2 seed Dayton, 9-3. Both teams are from Special District 3, and the Loggers (28-1) and Pirates (26-4) split their regular season games. In the 4A championship Saturday, No. 3 seed Astoria (23-5) upset No. 1 seed St. Helens (24-4), 7-0 to claim the title. Both are from the Cowapa League and the Lions won the league championship; however, they split their league games with a couple of one-run games and then the Lions prevailed in the league playoffs, 6-4. Ridgeview won the 5A championship, 9-0 over Thurston. And, Sherwood beat No. Medford, 10-6 for the 6A title.
