OSAA State Band

North Bend High School won the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union State 4A State Band Championships Saturday at LaSells Stewart Center, on the campus of Oregon State University, Corvallis. The Bulldogs, directed by Amber Yester, won with 291-points to St. Helens’ 286. Bandon, directed by David Weston, won the 2A/1A Band Championship with 305-points to runner-up Oakland with 227.

Boy’s Prep VB

Marshfield’s boys’ prep volleyball team qualified for the “Emerging” sport 8-team playoff bracket as the No. 8 team, 4A team. The Pirates will take on No. 1, Crook Co. in the quarter-final round. Other games have No. 7 Molalla vs. No. 2 Newport; No. 5 Cascade vs. No. 4 Philomath; and, No. 6 Phoenix vs. No. 3 Estacada. The Pirates and Cowboys are slated to play Saturday, May 24, 10 a.m., at the Olympus Sports Center, Hillsboro.

Prep TR, Wally Ciochetti Invitational

With district looming ahead this coming week for Oregon prep track & field teams, several south coast athletes moved into the State’s Best list following the Wally Ciochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove HS, Friday. Marshfield’s 4x400 Relay team of Chandler Wyatt, Bodey Lutes, Jake Day, & Carter McGriff lowered their 4A leading time to 42.47. The Pirates’ Jaxson Stovall now has the top time in the 1500 (4:03.63) and Marshfield’s 4X400 Relay team, McGriff, Wyatt, Day & Lutes, lowered their state leading time to 3:20.87. Siuslaw’s 4X400 Relay Team (Raymundo Brito Xilot, Clayton Wilson, Kale Jensen, Wesley Nicholls) ran the state’s fastest 3A time (3:22.66). North Bend’s Ellie Massey, who already holds the 4A state best in the 1500 (4:46.89), now has the top time for the 3000 (10:34.83) as well. Henley’s boys (139.5) won the 16-team competition, while Philomath took the girls (125.5) and was second in the boys (76). Siuslaw was third (73.5) and Marshfield fourth (72). North Bend’s girls were fourth (57) and the Bulldog boys ninth (28). Coquille’s girls (56) were fifth, followed by Siuslaw (55.5), Bandon ninth (43) and Marshfield 13th (13). Bandon’s boys were 15th (7) and Coquille 16th (2). Individually for the boys: Marshfield’s Bodey Lutes won the 800 (1:55.21) & North Bend’s Miles Baxter won the High Jump (6-4). For the girls: Bandon’s Makenna Vierck won the 400 (59.26). Coquille’s Holli Vigue won the Discus (139-7) with a 3A State leading mark and she also now has the top mark in the Shot Put (39-6.25), Bandon’s Caitlyn Michalek won the Javelin (138-4) with a 2A State leading mark, and Coquille’s Emelia Wirebaugh won the Triple Jump (34-10).

North Coast, Cowapa Lg.: St. Helens lost at Astoria, 1-0. Seaside fell at Tillamook, 16-14. 3A – Far West Lg.: Coquille lost twice at Sutherlin, 11-10 & 12-2 (5). Siuslaw dropped two at Glide, 14-1 & 11-0. Central Coast – SD3: Scio won at Taft, 18-2 (5). 2A/1A – SD4: Eddyville Charter lost at Bandon, 14-4. Waldport at Myrtle Pt. cancelled. North Coast – SD1: Nestucca lost twice at Knappa, 16-4 (5) & 15-0. Saturday, May 17 – 3A – SOC: Valley Catholic beat Brookings-Harbor 11-4 & 21-3 at North Bend. 2A/1A – SD 4: Powers downed visiting Eddyville Charter, 18-3.
