Portland Public Schools proposes closing 15-20 schools to meet newly announced minimum school enrollment goals: 360 students for elementary schools and 500 students for middle schools. For elementary schools, Margaret Calvert — the PPS executive director of school planning and modernization — said this should allow two classes per grade, which could mean 30 students per class, (“As Portland Public Schools weighs sweeping closures, parents wonder which schools will be left standing,” Aug. 28).
