I consider myself a liberal in every sense. As a public defense attorney, I maintain a healthy skepticism of state authority whenever police power threatens the liberty and dignity of an accused person. Yet liberalism depends upon the rule of law: evenhanded rules that restrain government, protect property and contracts and make free markets possible.
