When I first arrived in Vietnam in 1971, all of us new guys received a warning to not follow any illegal orders. We asked how we would know what was illegal. The answer was that sometimes an illegal order would be obvious, such as an order to kill noncombatant women and children; in other situations, we could depend on our sergeants and officers to tell us.
