After the loss of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits due to the government shut down that just ended, we have seen a massive increase in donations to food relief programs not only in Oregon but across the country. (“Portland-area governments mobilize to help families in need as federal SNAP benefits remain in limbo,” Nov. 4). Donations to hunger relief organizations jumped nearly 600% at the end of October.
