There’s a misconception that Portland parents universally oppose closing schools. Parents know Portland Public Schools is experiencing historic enrollment declines — operating at half its peak 1960s enrollment while managing most of its original school infrastructure. Tough choices lie ahead, including potential closures (“Portland school board shows early split over plan to close up to 14 schools,” Oct. 7).
