In Venezuela, U.S. President Donald Trump just made another giant step on his learning curve toward becoming a dominant autocratic ruler. Trump’s repeated failure to overturn his loss to Joe Biden in 2020, coupled with Trump’s floundering attempts to mobilize the National Guard in U.S. cities, have him practicing new strategies for overturning elections. Now that Trump has neutralized the other two branches of government — defeating our system of checks and balances — he feels free to use the military to capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro without the approval of Congress.
