Description

Gov. Tina Kotek’s $94 million investment in senior housing is welcome news, (“Gov. Kotek pledges $94M to house older Oregonians,” May 21). But the plan will help roughly 1,500 older Oregonians, and the issue is far larger than that. According to the most recent U.S. Census American Community Survey numbers, more than 100,000 older Oregon households — roughly one in five — spend more than half their income on housing today. This housing cost burden is a leading predictor for senior homelessness.
