Recent press releases from the Curry County Board of Commissioners Jay Trost, Patrick Hollinger, and Lynn Coker as well as news outlets have been issued regarding the Curry County Sheriff’s Office Marine Deputy. Claims were made against the Marine Deputy by former Commissioner Brad Alcorn and current Commissioner Patrick Hollinger stating the Marine Deputy was performing fraudulent boater inspections, submitting false information intended to deceive the State Marine Board, defrauding of a state agency to receive unjustified reimbursement of $182,000, exposure of the public to unnecessary risk by failing to perform the prescribed safety related tasks, and failure to supervise by the Sheriff. Commissioner Hollinger also stated he personally contacted boaters that were inspected by the Marine Deputy and claimed the boaters had no recollection of being inspected. A DOJ criminal complaint was launched against the Marine Deputy, and an investigation was initiated into the claims made by the Curry County Commissioners. The DOJ investigation was completed and the evidence found contradicted former Commissioner Brad Alcorn’s and Commissioner Patrick Hollinger’s statements against the Marine Deputy. Evidence showed the Marine Deputy kept a detailed log of all boater inspections completed and hours spent performing different duties. All information coincided with data input to the Marine Board EBR’s system. Evidence showed the Marine Deputy “showed strong command of boating rules and regulations and all explanations were credible”. Furthermore, Commissioner Hollinger has no law enforcement or Oregon State Marine law enforcement training. There was no evidence that supported Commissioner Hollinger’s claims of “spot checking” boats the Marine Deputy had inspected “with the owners having no recollection of the inspection”. In fact, there was evidence that showed courtesy inspections and guide inspections had been completed at Commissioner Hollinger’s private property by the Marine Deputy. Many of the fishing guides, local fishermen, and boaters using the waterways validated the Marine Deputy’s presence and saw him on a regular basis. The false accusations and false claims made by the Curry County Commissioners against the Marine Deputy were fabrications made to mislead the public, defame the Marine Deputy, and slander the Curry County Sheriff’s Office.
