Description
Remembering the Wreck of the Czarina: The Steamship Czarina foundered near the North Spit on January 12, 1910. As community members gathered on the beach, they watched helplessly as men climbed the masts and then, when they could grip no longer, fell into the roaring sea. Fires were lit along the beach as beckoning signs of hope.
On Monday evening, January 12, 2026, beacons of light will again be lit. Maritime students at Marshfield High School will place 23 lights along the wall of the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery near the final resting place of the Czarina victims.
To view the lights, head up Ingersoll Avenue from S. 7th St. Nearby is the memorial to the victims that was erected by the U. S. Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team. Turn into the MHS parking lot to see the memorial and learn more about the tragedy.
