Description
City of Coos Bay release - A citizen noticed sewage flowing from a manhole cover at the intersection of N. 14th Street and Birch Avenue the evening of Sunday, May 11, 2025. After investigating it was discovered that the sewer main had a blockage. The overflow has been contained, the contaminated area has been cleaned, and city staff have cleared the blockage. No sewer entered a waterway but an estimated 50 gallons spilled onto N. 14th Street. Because the sewer did not discharge at an approved location, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requires the city to report this as a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO). Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Oregon Emergency Response System were notified of the incident. Any questions can be directed to the Coos Bay Public Works Department at 541-269-1181 extension.
