NWAC 2025 Heptathlon Title won by Clark Athlete, SWOCC’s Nevaeh Dewitt Third
EUGENE, Ore. - Competing in her first year in the heptathlon, freshman Mia Hicks-Oliver of Clark College took home the title at the 2025 NWAC Multi-Event Championships on Tuesday, hosted by Lane Community College. Hicks-Oliver scored an impressive 4,382 points as she set personal bests in six of the seven events over the two-day championship. Her score would have been good enough to win the last three titles in the event as well, and the best heptathlon score in the NWAC since 2021. Hicks-Oliver narrowly held of Spokane's Afton Wood, who finished just behind with 4,302 points. Heading into the final event, the 800 meters, Hicks-Oliver held a 124 point lead over Wood. Spokane's Wood had the best entry time in the event. Hicks-Oliver would need to stay within about eight seconds of Wood to win the heptathlon title, and she did better than that as she finished just over three seconds behind. Hicks-Oliver gave everything she had in the race to finish not only second overall, but set a Clark program record in the event with a time of 2:25.54. Hicks-Oliver finished first in the 200-meter dash in 25.22 seconds and the long jump with a mark of 5.08 meters. She showed her consistency with a top-five finish in six of seven events out of 15 competitors. She finished second in both the 100-meter hurdles (15.92) and 800 meters (2:25.54). Many heptathletes had PRs overall at the championship including Wood who improved on her best score by over 200 points. Southwestern Oregon's Nevaeh Dewitt improved upon her PR from last year by nearly 600 points as she took third with 3,972 points. Spokane's Shauna Elliott finished in fourth with 3,681 points, followed by Lane's McKenna Crain (3,538), and a trio of Spokane competitors in Peyton Fox (3,464) and Hayden Schuh (3,459) and Emily Kaylor (3,440), who all scored points for their teams. Umpqua's Becky Tshianyi won the first event on Monday, the 100-meter hurdles, in 15.78 seconds. DeWitt took first in the high jump with a mark of 1.55 meters. Kaylor had the top shot put mark of 11.16 meters. Umpqua's McKenzie Carpenter had the best javelin throw of 38.06 meters. The top-eight finishers all scored points that go toward the 2025 NWAC Track & Field Championships team scores. The full championship meet will take place May 19-20 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon.
Lane's Hoff Vaults Way to NWAC Decathlon Championship
EUGENE, Ore. - Lane's Lucas Hoff used an impressive performance in the pole vault to lift him to the men's decathlon title at the 2025 NWAC Multi-Event Championships on Tuesday, hosted by Lane Community College. Heading into the final three events of the two-day meet, Hoff sat in third place and over 300 points behind first. Next up, however, was one of Hoff's best events, the pole vault. The freshman had the best entry mark of all decathlon competitors and fifth best in the entire NWAC at 4.57 meters. Hoff not only bested his PR, but continued to ascend higher and higher, eventually finishing at 4.90 meters, the top height in the NWAC this year. The mark scored him 880 total points, over 200 more than any other decathlete, and vaulted him into first place. A strong second place mark of 58.04 meters in the javelin all but assured him first place with just the 1,500 meters remaining. Hoff had a strong day one where he finished in the top-five in all five events and top-three in four of the events to rank in second place with 3,435 points. He won the long jump with a mark of 6.49 meters while taking second in the high jump and four meters. Teammate Cooper Seguin took second place with 6,108 points. Despite not winning any events, Seguin was extremely consistent with top-five finishes in nine of 10 events including three second place finishes. Clackamas' Treyson Wakefield took home the bronze medal with 5,974 points. Wakefield was in first after day one with wins in the 100-meter dash in 10.83 seconds and the 400-meters in 50.58 seconds. Also on the podium was Spokane's David Stingle who scored 5,923 points for fourth place. Lane's Jake Knight finished fifth with 5,868 points, followed by Clackamas' Kevin Villasenor (5,815), Spokane's Stephen Pittman (5,527) and Umpqua's Chase Powell (5,020).
